Besilu Stables Florida Derby Recap

When Stuart Janney III and Phipps Stable’s Orb powered to a 23/4-length victory in the March 30 Besilu Stables Florida Derby (gr. I), it was a fine representation of the multiple generations with which the Janney family has been involved in the Triple Crown hopeful’s pedigree.

“The family goes back to my grandmother…over the years it’s produced a lot of good horses,” said Janney, whose grandmother, Mrs. Henry Carnegie Phipps, campaigned Horse of the Year and leading sire Bold Ruler in the name of her Wheatley Stable.

Chairman of the family-owned Bessemer Trust Company and Bessemer Securities Corp., Janney is a first cousin of Ogden Mills “Dinny” Phipps, who co-bred and co-owns Orb under the name Phipps Stable.

In all, the last five generations of Orb’s female family have been bred by either Janney or his father, also named Stuart. The elder Stuart and his wife, Barbara, are known for campaigning the champion filly Ruffian, who is a member of racing’s Hall of Fame. The Janneys also owned the great Icecapade and Private Terms.

Stuart Janney III personally became involved in the female family with Orb’s third dam, Steel Maiden, in the late 1980s. A stakes winner, the Damascus mare is the great-granddam of two-time Argentine champion Suggestive Boy (by Easing Along).

Steel Maiden’s daughter, Mesabi Maiden, also bred by Janney and Phipps, captured the 1996 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (gr. II) and had earnings of more than $240,000. As a broodmare, she produced the winning, $200,000-plus earner Lady Liberty (by Unbridled), the dam of Kentucky-bred Orb.

Janney noted how Orb was a bright spot in Lady Liberty’s spotty broodmare career.

“This mare has had trouble foaling and had not produced a superior horse (prior to Orb),” said Janney. “He was a very attractive, athletic individual from the beginning, and it was always clear he was Lady Liberty’s best offspring.”

Lady Liberty, who aborted foals by Dixie Union and War Front in 2011 and 2012, delivered a Flatter colt Feb. 10. She is the dam of one other winner, $100,000-plus earner Cause of Freedom (by Alphabet Soup). The 14-year-old mare is kept at the Hancock family’s Claiborne Farm and is scheduled to be bred to Malibu Moon for 2014.

Malibu Moon is the sire of 68 stakes winners. Among his four added-money winners of 2013 are other graded victors Kauai Katie (gr. II) and More Chocolate (gr. II). Malibu Moon, a son of A.P. Indy, stands for $70,000 at Spendthrift Farm near Lexington.—E.M.
