Arlington Matron S. Recap

When breeders Robert and Stacy Mitchell of the Lexington-based Briland Farm first entered the Thoroughbred industry, they had the opportunity to purchase Chao Praya, an unraced Gold Legend mare, for just a dollar.

“She had an injured foot and couldn’t race, but I liked her pedigree,” explained Robert Mitchell of the mare, who later became the dam of Arlington Matron Stakes (gr. III) winner Imposing Grace. “When you’re just starting in the business, you don’t have an unlimited budget, and sometimes you have to choose between conformation, pedigree, or race record.”

Taking a chance on Chao Praya has clearly paid off for the Mitchells. Her first foal, $660,000-plus earner Level Playingfield (by Level Sands), was a track record setter and multiple stakes winner who scored his biggest victory in the 2004 Kentucky Cup Sprint Stakes (gr. III) at Turfway Park. The mare later produced a Saint Liam filly named Lakshmi, who was one of the highest-priced fillies at the 2008 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling sale when she brought $300,000 from John Fort. She was consigned by Bluewater Sales, agent.

Just two weeks after Chao Praya produced her latest success story, Imposing Grace, a daughter of Empire Maker, the Mitchells were faced with an unexpected tragedy.

“(Chao Praya) was being shipped to be bred back to Empire Maker and died in a van accident on the way,” said Mitchell. Fortunately, Imposing Grace made fine progress after being placed on a nurse mare and brought $75,000 at the 2010 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling sale. She was acquired by Pike Racing, agent, from Bluewater Sales, agent.

Imposing Grace is campaigned by Robert Cummings and his wife, Annette Bacola, of Coffeepot Stables. Residents of Chicago, Cummings is managing director of a private equity partnership, while Bacola is the former Michigan racing commissioner and is now involved in independent consulting. The couple is represented as breeder of three other black-type victors, including 2010 Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity (gr. I) winner J. B.’s Thunder.

Imposing Grace, trained by Wayne Catalano, was runner-up in two stakes at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots earlier this year. She now owns a career slate of 4-4-0 from 11 starts, for earnings of $241,320.

Empire Maker is the sire of 40 stakes winners. Among his five 2013 black-type winners are other graded victors Emollient (gr. I), Last Full Measure (gr. I), Sky Kingdom (gr. III), and Royal Delta (gr. III). Empire Maker stands for a private fee at JBBA Shizunai Stallion Station in Japan.—E.M.
