San Francisco Mile S. Recap

Karnel Jawl’s 5-year-old bay horse Tigah rallied impressively from last in a 10-horse field to capture the April 27 San Francisco Mile Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Golden Gate Fields.

The race marked the first black-type score for the son of Dalakhani, who was stakes-placed in France where he raced as a 3-year-old in 2011 for trainer Mikel Delzangles and owner, Marquise de Moratalla. He now holds a record of 4-3-2 from 13 starts, for earnings of $178,604.

Tigah has been sold three times at auction. After bringing $70,258 as a weanling and $170,268 as a yearling, he was bought for $180,725 by Hubert Guy Bloodstock at the 2011 Arqana Arc October sale. Delzangles consigned as agent.

“Hubert recommended him…he knew the trainer and liked Tigah’s form from previous races,” explained current trainer John Sadler. “He’s bought a lot of horses in Europe to race in the United States.”

In his first four U.S. starts in 2012, Tigah captured a one-mile allowance race at Santa Anita Park but then suffered a bone chip in his knee later that year that had to be surgically removed. After being turned out for several months, the horse returned to Santa Anita where he placed in two races, including the April 6 Thunder Road Stakes, prior to the San Francisco Mile.

Tigah is the only horse Sadler has in training for Jawl, a resident of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. In the past, Jawl has owned some horses in partnership with his son, Michael, including stakes winner Wind Surf. Michael Jawl, who also has a few horses with Sadler, is represented by graded victors Celtic New Year and See Me Through.

Tigah was bred in England by Klaus Jacobs’ Newsells Park Stud, which has been represented with several other graded/group winners over the years, including group I victor Gitano Hernando.

The operation bred Tigah from the winning, Irish-bred Platini mare Macina, who was group III-placed in Germany during her race career. A daughter of stakes winner Mamma’s Too (by Skyliner), Macina is the dam of four winners from six starters, including Practitioner (by Dr Fong), who ran third in the 2012 Chinese Club Challenge Cup (HK-III).

Macina’s last reported offspring is a 2011 German-bred Tertullian filly named Mupsellia.

Dalakhani is the sire of 31 stakes winners. An Irish-bred son of Darshaan, he stands for 25,000 euros at the Aga Khan’s Gilltown Stud in Ireland.—E.M.
