Indiana Oaks Recap

Indiana Oaks (gr. II) winner Pure Fun has proved to be exactly that to her partnership owners.

The 3-year-old chestnut filly, who scored her most recent victory by 13/4 lengths over Oscar Party, was named by co-owner and New York resident Peter Edwards, who campaigns her in partnership with his brother, Paul, Neil Jesse, Dean Demaree, Steve McCulley, Rusty Jones, Susan McPeek, and trainer Kenny McPeek under the Magdalena Racing banner.

“When we started talking about this horse…she’s by Pure Prize and we said, ‘We just want to have fun with her,’ ” remembered Peter Edwards. “And then my brother said, ‘Well, let’s name her Pure Fun then. If we’re gonna have fun, let’s have ‘Pure Fun.’ And I said, ‘That’s perfect.’ ”

Pure Fun has delivered plenty of excitement to the group in the last two years, with an additional victory in the 2012 Hollywood Starlet Stakes (gr. I) and a third-place effort in the March 23 Fathead Bourbonette Oaks (gr. III). In all, she holds a record of 4-1-2 from 12 starts, for earnings of $482,652.

“We’ve had a ball with her…you never know when they’re going to come along,” said Edwards, who with the same partnership group also owns this year’s Virginia Derby (gr. IIT) winner War Dancer.

Kentucky-bred Pure Fun was purchased for $22,000 by McPeek at the 2011 Keeneland September yearling sale from her breeder, Royal Oak Farm, agent.

“Nobody can pick out a horse better than Kenny can,” said Edwards. “He said, ‘This Pure Prize filly might be a good one…we’ll get her for cheap—around $50,000 or $60,000.’ I said, ‘Ok!’ Then we ended up getting her for $22,000. We looked at each other like, ‘Uh oh—what’s wrong with her?’ ”

“But she’s a great girl and really easy to get along with and just a super filly.”

Pure Fun, who is inbred 4X4 to Northern Dancer and 5X5 to Bold Ruler, is out of the winning Key to the Mint mare Chelsea Green. Lady Cornwall, the second dam of Chelsea Green, is a stakes-winning half sister to dual Canadian champion Par Excellance.

Chelsea Green has produced four winners from nine starters, including stakes-placed runner Lady Cheyne (by Affirmed). She was bred to Union Rags for 2014.

Pure Prize is the sire of 55 stakes winners. Among his 11 added-money winners of 2013 is group I victor Candy Marie. Pure Prize stood the 2013 season for $7,500 at Kenny Troutt’s WinStar Farm near Versailles, Ky.—E.M

Fathead Bourbonette Oaks Recap

Aron Wellman of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners might want to pencil in next year’s date for the Bourbonette Oaks (gr. III) for 3-year-old fillies at Turfway Park. The outfit’s triumph in this year’s running March 23 with Silsita was the second straight.

Silsita, a Macho Uno filly who was making her first start in a stakes, captured the mile event, officially run as the Fathead Bourbonette Oaks, by a nose over Marathon Lady. Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners races Silsita with Tanourin Stables, which is the breeder of the Florida-bred filly.

Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, in partnership with Gary Barber, won last year’s Bourbonette with In Lingerie. The Bourbonette victory was also In Lingerie’s first stakes start and was followed by scores that year in the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (gr. II) at Pimlico and the Juddmonte Spinster Stakes (gr. I) against older females at Keeneland. In Lingerie, who is by Empire Maker, was retired from racing in December and booked to European star Frankel.

Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners is off to a solid start this year. The outfit also is represented by 2013 graded stakes winner Amira’s Prince and stakes winner Judy In Disguise. An Irish-bred, Amira’s Prince has won the Mac Diarmida Stakes (gr. IIT) at Gulfstream Park for a partnership that also includes Barber. Judy In Disguise has captured the Sweet Life Stakes at Santa Anita.

Silsita’s Bourbonette win serves as a major boost for the filly’s female family. Silsita is the first graded winner tracing back several generations in her female family that descends from Calumet’s two-time champion Two Lea, the dam of Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Tim Tam.

Silsita is out of the multiple stakes-placed Wild Again mare Naturally Wild, whose dam, Nat’s Lea, was a three-time stakes winner in northern California.

Macho Uno has sired 21 stakes winners including 2013 grade II winner Mucho Mas Macho. Macho Uno stands at Adena Springs near Paris, Ky., for $20,000.—D.S.
