Indiana Derby Recap

Gary and Mary West’s Indiana Derby (gr. II) winner Power Broker serves as another piece of evidence to substantiate a well-known truism: A mare from a female family that has spent several generations in the stewardship of the Phipps family is worth her weight in gold. So when Audrey Otto’s Jamm Ltd. went shopping at the 2007 Keeneland November mixed sale for a broodmare to add to its collection, it settled on Shop Again, whom Otto purchased through Nicoma for $450,000 in foal to First Samurai.

While Shop Again (by Wild Again) had been bred by Jack Dreyfus’ Hobeau Farm and had won a minor stakes at Remington Park racing for Poindexter Thoroughbreds and Carrie Brogden, her dam Shopping (by Phipps homebred Private Account) had been bred by Arthur B. Hancock before he shuffled her off to Dreyfus.

For Dreyfus, Shopping produced an abundance of riches: four stakes winners that included in addition to Shop Again, grade I winner Miss Shop (by Deputy Minister), grade II winner Trappe Shot (by Tapit), and Bought in Dixie (by Dixieland Band).

Shopping was produced from Ogden Mills Phipps winning Majestic Prince mare Impish, a daughter of blue hen mare Lady Be Good (by Better Self) and a half sister to stakes winner and stakes producer Discipline (by Princequillo), stakes winner Disciplinarian (by the Phippses’ homebred Bold Ruler), stakes winner and stakes producer Full of Hope (by Bold Ruler), and grade III stakes winner and stakes producer In Hot Pursuit (by Bold Ruler). Thrown in for good measure are other daughters of Lady Be Good who earned no black type but produced it in abundance for generations.

The Wests bought Power Broker for $360,000 through Ben Glass, agent, from Mill Ridge Sales, agent, at the 2011 Keeneland September yearling sale. A son of Claiborne stalwart sire Pulpit, the handsome chestnut was the most expensive Pulpit colt sold at auction. He has more than recouped his expensive purchase price, having earned $865,612. At 2 he won the FrontRunner Stakes (gr. I) at Santa Anita. In his previous start prior to the Indiana Derby, he fell victim to the monster effort of Verrazano in the William Hill Haskell Invitational Stakes (gr. I) in which he finished second, six lengths to the good of third-placed Micromanage.

Shop Again’s yearling Malibu Moon filly sold for $1 million at Keeneland September, and there’s a weanling Smart Strike filly already named Smart Shopping waiting in the queue. Her 2-year-old Tiznow filly, Fierce Boots, is already a winner for Bobby Flay.

Pulpit is the sire of 70 stakes winners. He stood at Claiborne Farm near Paris, Ky., until his untimely death at 18 in 2012.—T.H.
