Eatontown H. Recap

Richard Santulli’s Irish-bred mare, Laughing, was all work and focus as she rallied her way to a win in her 2013 debut, the June 29 Eatontown Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Monmouth Park, breaking the course record in the process. The Alan Goldberg trainee now counts three black-type wins, two of which are graded stakes for owner Santulli.

Bred in Ireland by Floors Farming & the Duke of Devonshire, Laughing is by British stallion Dansili. Her Irish dam, Comic, is a daughter of Be My Chief. Consigned to the October 2009 Tattersalls yearling sale by Floors Stud, the filly was purchased for $459,488 by Charles O’Brien.

Laughing recorded three starts in Ireland for owners Susan Magnier and Jacqueline O’Brien, including a win in the Nijinsky Stakes at Leopardstown as a 3-year-old, her last start across the pond. Acquired by Santulli, her first effort on American soil came in the fall of 2011 to finish her 3-year-old campaign.

Comic, Laughing’s dam, has produced one other graded stakes winner. Her second foal, British-bred Comic Strip, a gelding by Irish stallion Marju, raced at 2 and 3 in England before moving to race primarily in Hong Kong (with one season in the UAE). Between the ages of 4 and 8 he earned between $1-$3 million per year. He retired at 9 with a record of 18-5-10 from 51 starts—12 stakes wins included—and a whopping $10,717,356 in earnings. Named the 2009 Horse of the Year in Hong Kong, he holds four other champion titles in that country.

Laughing’s unraced second dam, Circus Act, produced three stakes winners. One of them, a Persian Bold colt named Brave Act, raced in England and North America accumulating multiple graded stakes wins and earnings of more than $1.5 million. In this family of winners and producers, Laughing’s third dam, Circus Ring, and fourth dam, Bell Song, were also stakes-winning producers of stakes winners.

Dansili counts Laughing’s win as the 13th from his progeny in 2013. A son of the formidable Danehill, he has sired 82 stakes winners and has nine sons standing at stud on three continents. He stood for a 2013 fee of 80,000 ($120,000) at Banstead Manor Stud in England.—M.P.
