Fly Down might have run his way into the June 5 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) with his last-to-first score in the May 8 Dwyer Stakes (gr. II) at Belmont Park. He scored by six lengths and recorded a 99 Beyer Speed Figure.

Fly Down is the first stakes winner for Richard C. Pell, who started in racing in 2008. ÒWeÕve always given him a nice break between races,Ó said Pell, a New York money manager. ÒNick has always been high on this horse. The horse has always handled himself like a pro. I thought he would run well today and that this track would suit him, but he really was impressive.Ó

Broadway Thoroughbreds and William S. Farish are the breeders of Fly Down, who is the second stakes winners from the Fly So Free mare Queen Randi. The mareÕs first added-money winner, Seafree (by Chief Seattle), won the La Canada Stakes (gr. II) and ran third in the Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap (gr. I).

Fly Down is a product of a foal share. His sire, 2003 Horse of the Year Mineshaft, stands at FarishÕs LaneÕs End Farm near Versailles, Ky.

Fly Down is the first stakes winner to represent Broadway Thoroughbreds as a breeder. ÒWeÕre a breeding and racing partnership consisting of about six or seven friends who formed the outfit at Saratoga,Ó said spokesman Jeff Anderson about the Saratoga Springs, N.Y., outfit.

Robert Lennon, a member of Broadway Thoroughbreds prior to his death, and Anderson were at the 2003 Keeneland November breeding stock sale when Lennon bought Queen Randi and another mare for less than $10,000 each. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent, Queen Randi was purchased for $7,000 in foal to Sea of Secrets.

Fly Down was foaled at Matt KochÕs Shawhan Place near Paris, Ky. Broadway Thoroughbreds sold Queen Randi privately during the winter.

Mineshaft has sired 14 stakes winners, including additional 2010 added-money winners Discreetly Mine (gr. II) and Redding Colliery. MineshaftÕs fee at LaneÕs End is $20,000.ÑD.S.
