Eskendereya solidified his hold as the favorite for the May 1 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) on Steve HaskinÕs Derby Dozen (page 1207) when he won the April 3 Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. I) by 93Ú4 lengths at Aqueduct. The victory kept the son of GiantÕs Causeway unbeaten for the year and came after the colt won the Feb. 20 Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) by 81Ú2 lengths at Gulfstream Park.

If Eskendereya, owned by Ahmed ZayatÕs Zayat Stables, wins the Kentucky Derby, he will become the first horse to capture both the Wood Memorial and the Run for the Roses since Fusaichi Pegasus in 2000 and only the second since Pleasant Colony in 1981.

Gallant Fox, in 1930, was the first to win the two races. He was followed by Twenty Grand (in 1931), Johnstown (1939), Count Fleet (1943), Hoop, Jr. (1945, who won a division of the Wood), Assault (1946), Bold Forbes (1976), and Seattle Slew (in 1977). DancerÕs Image won the 1968 Wood and finished first in the Kentucky Derby but was disqualified in the latter race.

Zayat, whose colt Pioneerof the Nile finished second in last yearÕs Kentucky Derby, purchased Eskendereya for $250,000 at the 2008 Keeneland September yearling sale from Woods Edge Farm, agent for Sanford R. Robertson, breeder of Eskendereya.

Eskendereya was foaled and raised at Woods Edge, owned by Peter OÕCallaghan and located near Lexington. OÕCallaghan is a son of Gay OÕCallaghan, owner of Yeomanstown Stud in Ireland.

EskendereyaÕs dam, Aldebaran Light, is boarded at Woods Edge. Aldebaran Light is in foal to Henny Hughes. She is booked to GiantÕs Causeway.

GiantÕs Causeway, this yearÕs leading sire, has sired 81 stakes winners. His five added-money winners of 2010 also include Neko Bay (gr. II) and Connemara (gr. III). GiantÕs Causeway stands for $100,000 at CoolmoreÕs Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky.ÑD.S.
