Blame stamped himself as a force to be reckoned with in the handicap division next year with a determined neck victory over Misremembered in the Clark Handicap Presented by Norton Healthcare (gr. II) at Churchill Downs Nov. 27.

The Clark win was the second consecutive victory over older horses by Blame, who entered the race off of an impressive 11Ú4-length win over Parading in the Fayette Stakes (gr. II) at Keeneland Oct. 31. Blame now boasts a record of five wins from eight starts, and earnings of $616,747.

Breaking from post 5 under jockey Jamie Theriot, Blame was stuck racing wide for most of the race, traveling as much as eight-wide into the clubhouse turn. Theriot was able to steer Blame closer to the inside rail going down the backstretch but then swung his charge five-wide going around the far turn.

Theriot then maneuvered Blame between horses in the upper stretch to challenge Misremembered and Anak Nakal, and the colt was able to get his head in front as the field entered the final furlong. Misremembered battled back, but Blame held on stubbornly to win by a neck. Final time for the nine-furlong contest was 1:49.39.

Trainer Albert Stall Jr. said after the race that Blame would spend the winter at Fair Grounds, and noted that the BreedersÕ Cup is at Churchill next year. ÒHe could do a number of things. HeÕs done everything; heÕs won on (synthetic surfaces), and heÕs run well on the dirt. ItÕll be fun talking about it.Ó

Bred and owned by Claiborne Farm and Adele B. Dilschneider, Blame is a son of the Claiborne stallion Arch. Seth Hancock purchased Arch for $710,000 from the consignment of King Ranch at the 1996 Keeneland July yearling sale.

Out of the stakes-winning Danzig mare Aurora, Arch is a great-grandson of the blue hen producer, Courtly Dee. Broodmare of the Year in 1983, Courtly Dee produced Althea (champion 2-year-old filly of 1983) in addition to graded stakes winners Ketoh, Ali Oop, Twining, Aishah, Native Courier, and Aquilegia.

Blame is out of the stakes-placed Seeking the Gold mare, Liable. LiableÕs second dam, Special, produced Nureyev, along with Fairy Bridge (dam of SadlerÕs Wells and Fairy King) and Number (dam of Numerous).

After being barren to the cover of Dynaformer for 2009, Liable has been bred to Tiznow for 2010.

Arch is the sire of 26 stakes winners, including three 2009 added-money winners. Arch stands at the Hancock familyÕs Claiborne Farm near Paris, Ky., where he will stand for $25,000 in 2010.ÑM.J.S.
