Bo HirschÕs homebred Papa Clem, who finished fourth in the 2009 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) but had been winless in six starts leading up to the Jan. 16 San Fernando Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita Park, put himself back onto the radar when he captured the latter race by a half-length.

Papa Clem, who won last yearÕs Arkansas Derby (gr. II), now stands at 3-2-2 from 13 starts, with earnings of $1,121,190.

Hirsch named Papa Clem, a son of Smart Strike, after his father Clement L. Hirsch. A successful owner and breeder in California for about 40 years until his death in 2000, the elder Hirsch was instrumental in the establishment of the Oak Tree Racing Association.

Clement Hirsch bought Papa ClemÕs second dam Magical Maiden for $26,000 at the 1991 California March 2-year-old sale from Two Creek Ranch. The daughter of Lord Avie won or placed in 17 stakes during her 26-start career. Among her victories were the 1991 Hollywood Starlet Stakes and 1992 Las Virgenes Stakes (both gr. I).

Magical Maiden is a half-sister to grade II winner Magical Mile (by J. O. Tobin), stakes winner and stakes producer Magic Sister (by Mr. Redoy), and multiple stakes producer Magical Flash (by Miswaki).

As a broodmare, Magical Maiden produced Papa ClemÕs dam, Miss Houdini, a grade I-winning daughter of Belong to Me.

While racing for Bo Hirsch, a native of Pacific Palisades, Calif., Miss Houdini captured the 2002 Del Mar Debutante Stakes (gr. I). Hirsch had bought Miss Houdini, along with a few other mares, from his fatherÕs estate when the elder Hirsch died in 2000.

In keeping with the family connections, Magical Maiden and and Miss Houdini were trained by Warren Stute, the late uncle of Papa ClemÕs trainer, Gary Stute.

Hirsch gave considerable credit for Papa ClemÕs success to bloodstock agent Kathy Berkey, who chooses all his matings.

ÒKathy has done a fabulous job,Ó Hirsch said. ÒIÕm always breeding to run, not to sell. She calls the shots, and the record shows sheÕs done an excellent job.Ó

Papa Clem, the second foal out of Miss Houdini, is a half-brother to the stakes-placed Victory Gallop mare Magical Victory. Kept at Robert OchockiÕs Columbiana Farm near Paris, Ky., Miss Houdini is in foal to Medaglia dÕOro and is due Feb. 27. She is booked to Candy Ride for 2011.

Smart Strike is the sire of 70 stakes winners. The 18-year-old son of Mr. Prospector will stand the 2010 season for $75,000 at Will FarishÕs LaneÕs End Farm near Versailles, Ky. He stood for $125,000 in 2009.ÑE.M.
