Principle Secret continued to impress after taking the Best Pal Stakes (gr. II) by three lengths over Great Hunter at Del Mar Aug. 13. The 2-year-old colt spotted the field almost five lengths at the start of the race after breaking nearly on his knees.

The Sea of Secrets colt is now a perfect two-for-two in his young career. He broke his maiden first time out at Del Mar July 22 for trainer Christopher Paasch and Paasch’s wife, Bonnie, who owned him at the time. Charles Cono of San Diego purchased Principle Secret privately after that race, which the colt won by 43¼4 lengths over Horse Greeley. Paasch continues to train the colt.

Paasch also trains grade I winner Diplomat Lady for Cono. The Forestry filly won the 2005 Hollywood Starlet Stakes (gr. I) and 2006 Stonerside Beaumont Stakes (gr. II). She finished off the board in her last start, the Darley Test Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga. Paasch also trained grade III winner Crowned Dancer for Cono, who owned the colt in partnership.

Victory Racing bred Principle Secret in Kentucky out of the winning Gray Slewpy mare Beright. Paasch claimed the mare for $16,000 in 1999 and was training her for Eastern Sky Unlimited Trust when she retired.

Beright is out of the winning Desert Wine mare Brandy O’Brien and is a half-sister to stakes winners Barbara O’Brien and Brandy Rules. Barbara O’Brien (by Eltish) won the 2003 Chaposa Springs Handicap (gr. III) while Brandy Rules (by Ruhlmann) won the 1996 Lassie Stakes and the 1997 Hot Lemonaid Handicap.

Brandy O’Brien is out of the stakes-winning D’Artagnan mare Irish O’Brien and is a half-sister to Blaze O’Brien (by Interco), who won the 1995 Inglewood Handicap (gr. IIIT).

Principle Secret is the first foal to live out of Beright. Her 2002 Olympio colt named Resign died as a foal. She was barren to Pine Bluff for 2005 and delivered a Lost Soldier filly April 8.

Sea of Secrets is the sire of six stakes winners, including additional 2006 added-money winner My Miss Storm Cat. The 11-year-old son of Storm Cat stood the 2006 season for $3,500 at Donald and Karen Cohn’s Ballena Vista Farm in California. His 2007 fee will be $5,000.—A.H.D.
