After going winless in three races on dirt to start his career, Red Giant has taken a huge liking to turf racing. His victory in the July 21 Virginia Derby (gr. IIT) at 37-1 at Colonial Downs came in course-record time of 1:59.62 for 11¼4 miles and was his fourth in five races on grass. He won the June 17 Restoration Stakes at Monmouth Park in his last start.

Red Giant, who races for John P. Fort’s Peachtree Stable, possesses a pedigree made for turf. Both his sire, Giant’s Causeway, and broodmare sire, Kingmambo, were European group I winners who have developed into important turf stallions.

Red Giant’s female family, going back to third dam Konafa, is equally blessed. A daughter of Damascus, Konafa is the ancestress of such European champions as Bosra Sham, Hector Protector, and Proskona, as well as U.S. grade I turf winners Ciro and Passinetti.

Fort bought Red Giant for $350,000 at the 2005 Keeneland September yearling sale from Dromoland Farm, agent. The previous year, Red Giant had gone through the Keeneland November breeding stock sale as a weanling and was bought back for $150,000 by Gerry Dilger’s Dromoland, agent.

Peachtree has raced additional 2007 stakes winner Twilight Meteor and earlier graded stakes winners Chimichurri, Coin Silver, High Cotton, and Shrike. Twilight Meteor captured the Hallandale Beach Stakes at Gulfstream Park in February.

Although Peachtree has raced a number of stakes winners, the South Carolina-based outfit perhaps is best known for racing Invisible Ink. A son of Thunder Gulch, Invisible Ink was brought back from certain death as a young horse and went on to run second in the 2001 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and third in the Florida Derby (gr. I). He stands at Jim and Sheila DiMare’s Rising Hill Farm near Ocala, Fla.

Red Giant was bred by Edward and Marilyn Seltzer and foaled at Dromoland near Lexington. Edward Seltzer has bred a number of stakes winners, including 1985 Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner Tank’s Prospect and later grade I winners Fire the Groom and Senor Tomas. Bred in partnership, Fire the Groom also was a European champion.

Red Giant’s dam, Beyond the Sun, is boarded at Dromoland near Lexington. Barren the past two breeding seasons, she is in foal to Vindication.

Giant’s Causeway has sired 31 stakes winners. His 11 stakes winners of 2007 include My Typhoon (gr. IIT), Bridge Game (gr. IIIT), Charm the Giant (gr. IIIT), Drilling for Oil (gr. IIIT), Fairbanks (gr. III), Giant Wrecker (gr. IIIT), Naissance Royale (gr. IIIT), and Murjana (Aust-III). Giant’s Causeway stands at Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky. His 2007 fee was private.—D.S.
