Grade I winner Honest Lady is turning into an honest producer as well. As the result of her son First Defence’s 21/4-length win in the July 14 Long Branch Breeders’ Cup Stakes at Monmouth Park, she has now produced two stakes winners from three foals to race.

Bobby Frankel trains the homebred 3-year-old colt for Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms. The Long Branch was the Unbridled’s Song colt’s first attempt at stakes company, and he has now won three of five starts.

It was a successful weekend for Juddmonte Farms homebreds as Zambezi Sun won the Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris (Fr-I) and Art Master took the Poker Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Belmont Park.

Honest Lady’s other stakes winner, Phantom Rose, won the 2006 Prix d’Angerville as a 3-year-old. The Danzig filly was returned to the United States to race and won her first start stateside, but died last December.

It is not surprising that Honest Lady, who won four graded stakes races including the 2000 Santa Monica Handicap (gr. I), found success both on and off the track. The Seattle Slew mare hails from one of Juddmonte’s most prominent families. Her dam, the grade I-winning El Gran Senor mare Toussaud, also produced fellow grade I winners Empire Maker (by Unbridled), Chester House (by Mr. Prospector), and Chiselling (by Woodman) as well as grade II winner Decarchy (by Distant View). In 2002, Toussaud was named the Kentucky Broodmare of the Year.

Toussaud is a full sister to grade III winner Navarra and a half-sister to stakes winner Image of Class (by Codex). Navarra went on to produce grade III winner Indygo Shiner (by A.P. Indy). They are out of the grade II-winning In Reality mare Image of Reality, who Juddmonte bought for $500,000 at the 1987 Keeneland November mixed sale from DanDar Farm, agent.

Both Toussaud and Honest Lady are kept at Juddmonte Farms near Lexington. Toussaud was not bred for 2007 and has a yearling A. P. Indy filly. Honest Lady has an unraced juvenile Storm Cat filly named Honest Pursuit, a yearling Elusive Quality filly, and a weanling colt by Smart Strike.

Unbridled’s Song is the sire of 53 stakes winners including additional 2007 added-money winners Octave (gr. I), Political Force (gr. I), Half Ours (gr. II), and Unbridled Sidney. The 14-year-old son of Unbridled stood the 2007 season at the Taylor family’s Taylor Made Stallions near Nicholasville, Ky., for a fee of $200,000.—A.H.D.
