Monzante garnered the first stakes victory of his career with a three-length win over race favorite Neko Bay March 8 in the Santana Mile Handicap at Santa Anita. Mike Mitchell trains the 4-year-old Maria’s Mon gelding, who came into the race off a third-place finish Feb. 2 in the Strub Stakes (gr. II).

Jay and Gretchen Manoogian own Monzante in partnership with Scott Anastasi. Although he was bred in Kentucky, Monzante began his career in England for his breeder, Khaled Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms. He broke his maiden in his second start and raced four more times for Juddmonte before being offered at the 2007 Tattersalls July mixed sale. There, he was purchased by Jamie Lloyd and Gordian Troeller for $212,867 and was returned to the United States.

Other stakes winners campaigned by Jay Manoogian include grade I winner Kela and grade II winners Battle Won and Quintons Gold Rush. The last mentioned was owned in partnership with Padua Stables. In different partnerships, Anastasi campaigned grade II winner Leprechaun Kid and stakes winner Texcess.

Monzante comes from a family rich in black type. His dam, the stakes-winning Danzig mare Danzante, raced as a homebred for Juddmonte. In addition to being a stakes winner in France, she was also group III-placed there and grade II-placed in the U.S. Danzante is out of the stakes-winning Boldnesian mare Bold Captive, who also produced 1986 Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I) winner Skywalker, grade II winner Pac Mania, group III winner Nidd, and stakes winner Royal Captive.

Juddmonte Farms bought Bold Captive for $2.6 million shortly after Skywalker’s big win when she was offered at the 1986 Keeneland November mixed sale by Stone Farm, agent for Oak Cliff Thoroughbreds.

Monzante is the second stakes winner out of Danzante, who is also the dam of added-money winner Alpha Plus, a group III-placed son of Mr. Prospector. One of Danzante’s daughters, Tentative (by Distant View), is also stakes-placed.

Kept at Juddmonte Farms near Lexington, Danzante has a juvenile filly by Distant View named Coco Crunch and a yearling filly by Stormy Atlantic. Mill Ridge Sales, agent, offered Coco Crunch at the 2007 Keeneland September yearling sale, and she was purchased by Adena Springs for $62,000.

Twenty-year-old Danzante is carrying a full sibling to Monzante and will be bred to Latent Heat, who is by Maria’s Mon. A grade-I winning homebred for Juddmonte, Latent Heat is standing his first year at stud at Woods Edge Farm near Lexington.

Champion 2-year-old male of 1995, Maria’s Mon is the sire of 35 stakes winners including additional 2008 added-money winners champion Wait a While (gr. IIT) and Sky Mom. The son of Wavering Monarch, who stood at Josephine Abercrombie’s Pin Oak Stud near Versailles, Ky., was euthanized last September due to laminitis. He was 14.—A.H.D.
