On the 20th anniversary of the blaze that destroyed the old Arlington Park—British invader Powerscourt returned to the scene of his eventful disqualification exactly one year ago.

The 5-year-old son of Sadler’s Wells unleashed a devastating final kick to surge past Kitten’s Joy in the late stretch for a three-length win in the Arlington Million (gr. IT) Aug. 13, leaving his connections $600,000 richer and his own reputation fully restored.

Powerscourt was bred in Great Britain by Juddmonte Farms, Eclipse Award-winning breeders for three years in a row from 2001-03. Owned by Khalid Abdullah, Juddmonte’s North American operations near Lexington house stallions Empire Maker and Aptitude among others. In Europe, their Banstead Manor Stud is located in the heart of the British Thoroughbred industry in the village of Cheveley, just four miles south of the city of Newmarket.

Susan Magnier has campaigned Powerscourt throughout his 21-start career.

Powerscourt is out of the group stakes-winning Rainbow Quest mare Rainbow Lake. A British homebred for Juddmonte, Rainbow Lake won the 1993 Lancashire Oaks (Eng-III) and Ballymacoll Stud Stakes.

Powerscourt’s damsire is English and French champion Rainbow Quest, by Blushing Groom, who won the 1985 Trusthouse Forte Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Fr-I). Rainbow Quest is also the broodmare sire of Meteor Storm, another Juddmonte-bred, who ran fourth in the Sword Dancer Invitational Stakes (gr. IT) at Saratoga Aug. 13.

Now 15, Rainbow Lake also produced the 4-year-old Irish-bred filly Kind, by Danehill, who captured the 2004 Betfair.com Flower of Scotland Stakes, the 2005 Totesport Fillies Stakes, and placed third in the 2005 Ballyogan Stakes (Eng-III).

Rainbow Lake produced a full brother to Powerscourt last year.

Sadler’s Wells, sire of 258 stakes winners, is represented by 17 added-money winners in 2005—16 solely in Europe—including English group I winner Yeats. Powerscourt is his first North American stakes victor this year. A 24-year-old son of Northern Dancer, Sadler’s Wells stood the 2005 season at Coolmore Stud in Ireland for a private fee.—P.V.S.
