Crowned King established himself as a member of 3-year-old royalty after scoring a 11/4-length victory over post time favorite Great Notion in the March 22 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park. Crowned King covered the 11/16-mile distance in 1:44, returning $75.60.

The Rebel win increased Crowned King’s lifetime record to 10-3-1-2. He has earned $130,700.

Crowned King entered the Rebel winless in three 2003 starts. His best finish on the year had been a third-place effort in the March 9 Sportsmans Paradise Stakes at Delta Downs. He had finished 10th in the Feb. 16 Risen Star Stakes (gr. III) and eighth in the Jan. 25 Lecomte Stakes (gr. III).

“We had him at the Fair Grounds and he didn’t like that surface, so we went to Delta Downs. He liked the Delta surface and that track is similar to Oaklawn so we came here for this race,” said Billy McKeever, who owns and trains Crowned King.

The trainer said Crowned King could next start in the April 12 Arkansas Derby (gr. II).

Nathan Fox and Richard Kaster’s Wafare Farm bred both Crowned King and his dam, Formeredith, who is by Dynaformer and out of the winning Sovereign Dancer mare Sovereign Mistress. Crowned King was consigned to the 2001 Keeneland October yearling sale where he failed to meet his reserve and was bought back for $4,000.

Sovereign Mistress has produced 10 foals for Wafare, including five in partnership with Joseph Haller’s Haller Stables. Sovereign Mistress is now owned solely by Haller and is kept at Honey Suckle Farm near Versailles, Ky., which is owned by his daughter, Janeen Oliver.

Fox purchased Sovereign Mistress for $14,000 at the 1991 Keeneland January mixed sale in foal to Dynaformer from the consignment of Bedford Hills, agent. Sovereign Mistress has a yearling Canaveral filly that was bred by Haller Stables and a 2-year-old Dynaformer colt. Sovereign Mistress is in foal to Glitterman.

Formeredith is at Wafare, where she has a 2-year-old Acceptable colt, Accept for Ryan, who was bred in Kentucky by Kaster, Fox, and John Kuehl. Accept for Ryan failed to meet his reserve and was bought back for $37,000 at the 2002 Keeneland September yearling sale. The mare also has a yearling Richter Scale filly, bred by the same trio. Formeredith is in foal to Richter Scale and is booked to Glitterman.

Barkerville is the sire of Crowned King and 13 other added-money winners. He formerly stood in Chile. Barkerville stands at Wafare Farm near Midway, Ky. His 2003 fee is $5,000.—L.D.
