Making his first start since finishing third to Pleasantly Perfect in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic - Powered by Dodge (gr. I), Dynever launched his 2004 campaign with a bang by notching an impressive 41/2-length win in the April 3 San Bernardino Handicap (gr. III). Total Impact was second, with Even the Score two lengths behind in third. Dynever completed the 11/8-mile distance in 1:48.07.

The win by Dynever was his first since last May’s Lone Star Derby (gr. III) at Lone Star Park. As a 3-year-old he also won the Aventura Stakes and finished second in the Meadowlands Breeders’ Cup Stakes (gr. II) and the West Virginia Derby (gr. III).

Dr. Catherine Wills bred Dynever in Kentucky from her Zilzal mare Flamboyance, and races him in partnership with Peter Karches. Wills took over the racing operation of her father, David Wills, after his death in 1999. David Wills bred 1959 Kentucky Derby winner Tomy Lee and 1953 One Thousand Guineas winner Happy Laughter, among others. Catherine Wills now keeps mares in England and the United States.

Alone or in partnership, Karches has campaigned stakes winners Statesmanship (gr. II), Fast Decision (gr. III), Ghost Story, and Seducer.

Wills purchased Flamboyance for $11,856 at the 1996 Tattersalls October horses of racing age sale when she was two. Trainer James Fanshawe signed the ticket on her behalf, and saddled the mare for her first eight starts. She was then moved to trainer Christophe Clement’s barn in the U.S. for six starts. Clement also conditions Dynever.

Wills still owns Flamboyance as well as her first foal, Intangible (by Diesis). Intangible produced her first foal this year, a colt by Kyllachy, who was foaled in Kentucky. Flamboyance has a 3-year-old Rahy filly, Flagrant, who was returned to the United States from Great Britain last year. The mare also has a 2-year-old Gulch filly, Fluorescence, and a yearling Distant View filly.

Dynaformer is the sire of Dynever and 59 other added-money winners, including additional 2004 stakes winner Mystery Giver (gr. IIT). Dynaformer stands at Robert N. Clay’s Three Chimneys Farm near Midway, Ky. His 2004 fee is $75,000.—L.D.
