Total Impact’s standing on the older male division underwent a sizable gain after the Chilean-bred champion won the July 10 Hollywood Gold Cup Stakes (gr. I). His bankroll did the same for owners Prince Sultan Mohammed Saud al Kabeer and Bridport S.A.

Total Impact, whose Gold Cup earnings of $450,000 upped his earnings to $1,159,568, figured to like the 11/4-mile distance, especially since his sire, Stuka, had won the Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I) at the same distance. Stuka’s victory in the 1994 Big ‘Cap as a 4-year-old came in his last year of racing.

A member of the ruling family of Dubai, Prince Kabeer raced a number of earlier North American stakes winners alone, including grade I turf winners Apple Tree, Broadway Flyer, and Lassigny. Apple Tree, a group I winner in France, Germany, and England, won the 1993 Turf Classic Invitational Stakes (gr. IT) at Belmont Park, and Broadway Flyer captured the 1996 Sword Dancer Invitational Handicap (gr. IT) at Saratoga. Lassigny took the 1995 Rothmans Ltd. International Stakes (gr. IT) at Woodbine.

Total Impact also figured to have picked up something in the way of stamina from Roberto, grandsire of his dam, Chilean-bred Pebbles. Roberto won the 1972 Epsom Derby (Eng-I) at 11/2 miles and developed into a prominent sire of sires while standing at John Galbreath’s Darby Dan Farm near Lexington.

Manos de Piedra, a son Roberto and Total Impact’s broodmare sire, raced sparingly in the U.S., finishing first or second in four of six starts, before being sent to Chile in 1988. His offspring include Chilean Horse of the Year Pradilla and Las Oaks (Chi-I) winner Perhaps Love.

Total Impact is one of four U.S. stakes winners representing Haras Don Alberto as breeder the past two years. The others are 2004 graded winners Noches De Rosa and Tronare (by Stuka) and 2003 stakes winner Gondolieri. Noches De Rosa won the May 31 Gamely Breeders’ Cup Handicap (gr. IT) at Hollywood Park.

Stuka, who went out a winner in the Skywalker Handicap at Santa Anita for breeder/owner Allen Paulson, is the sire of additional 2004 stakes winners Tronare (gr. IIIT) and Bereguedex (in Brazil) among his nine known stakes winners. At last report, Stuka stood in Brazil.—D.S.
