More Than Ready became more than a stakes winner on Aug. 26. With his King’s Bishop Stakes victory he became a grade I winner and hopped closer to the million-dollar mark with $120,000 in prize money.

More Than Ready now has six lifetime added-money wins, all at distances of seven furlongs or less. As a 2-year-old, More Than Ready captured the five-furlong WHAS-11 and Flash Stakes, the 51/2-furlong Tremont (gr. III) and the six-furlong Sanford (gr. II). This year, his biggest win prior to the King’s Bishop also was his last win prior to the race, the Jan. 29 Hutcheson Stakes (gr. II), where he dead-heated with Summer Note for the win.

James T. Scatuorchio paid $187,000 for More Than Ready at the 1998 Keeneland September yearling sale, then sent him to trainer Todd Pletcher. When the colt’s early training eclipsed the speed with which he was named, More Than Ready was suggested by Scatuorchio’s wife, Terry.

The Scatuorchios live in Rumson, N.J. More Than Ready was the couple’s first horse owned without partners. Now they have a group of horses with Pletcher, including 4-year-old Cayman Cat and 2-year-old Windsor Court. They also raced homebred Right Now (Twilight Agenda—Future of Gold) before he was claimed in his third start early this year.

More Than Ready is the only stakes-winning foal from the Woodman mare Woodman’s Girl. Her most recent foal to go through the ring was a Red Ransom filly, purchased by Brushwood Stable for $800,000 at last year’s Keeneland September sale. On the first day of this year’s sale, Sept. 11, another foal from Woodman’s Girl, a bay filly by Dixieland Band, will be sold by Robert Hoeweler and Walter Hillenmeyer’s Woodlynn Farm, which bred More Than Ready.

Southern Halo is the sire of More Than Ready and 78 other added-money winners. The majority of the stallion’s stakes winners have been in South America, where the stallion previously stood. Two of those horses, Mi Surena and Serenita, have captured group I races in Argentina this year. Syndicated Southern Halo stands at Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky. His 2000 fee was $30,000.—K.J.I.
