Brereton Jones' Lovely Maria chose the right date to put in the best race of her career, tracking the early pace and surging in the stretch to win the $500,000 Central Bank Ashland Stakes (gr. I) April 4 at Keeneland.
After missing the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) with a slight ligament tear at the base of her fetlock, the Olly Stevens trainee is back with an eye on the April 4 Central Bank Ashland (gr. I).
A minor operation to place a pin in the right knee of champion 2-year-old filly Take Charge Brandi March 12 was a "textbook procedure," Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas reported March 13 at Oaklawn Park.
Take Charge Brandi will miss the March 14 Rebel Stakes (gr. II) with a non-displaced bone chip in her right knee. The injury will also prevent her from a run in the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) or Kentucky Derby (gr. I).
Oaklawn officials said Take Charge Brandi appears headed for a showdown against top 3-year-old males in the Rebel Stakes (gr. II) March 14, as last year's champion 2-year-old filly will not race in the Honeybee (gr. III).
Churchill Downs' Kentucky Derby Future Wager pool 3 closed March 1 with the mutuel field, or "All Others", the tepid 4-1 favorite, while American Pharoah and Dortmund were the top two individual interests.
Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas said he hopes to breeze champion filly Take Charge Brandi March 2 at Oaklawn Park in preparation for her next start, possibly against males in the $750,000 Rebel Stakes (gr. II) March 14.
There are 154 fillies on the list of early nominees to the $1 million Longines Kentucky Oaks (gr. I), including Willis Horton's 2014 champion 2-year-old filly Take Charge Brandi.
Owner Willis Horton confirmed Feb. 25 that the $750,000 Rebel Stakes (gr. II) at Oaklawn Park March 14 is under consideration as a target for champion Take Charge Brandi, although a decision has not yet been made.
Streaking champion 2-year-old filly Take Charge Brandi is a narrow choice as the favored individual horse, but the ever-popular mutuel field is the morning-line favorite in Kentucky Oaks Future Wager odds.
Willis Horton's champion Take Charge Brandi posted a five-furlong bullet work in 1:00 2/5 Feb. 21 at Oaklawn Park, a major move in preparation for her upcoming outing in the $150,000 Honeybee Stakes (gr. III) March 7.
Silverbulletday Stakes winner I'm a Chatterbox will aim for her first graded stakes win when she starts in the $175,000 Rachel Alexandra Stakes (gr. III) Saturday, Feb. 21, at Fair Grounds Race Course and Slots.
