Ride On Curlin, under regular exercise rider Bryan Beccia, worked an easy half mile in :49 3/5 after the break the morning of Feb. 11 in preparation for the $100,000 Essex Handicap to be run Feb. 14 at Oaklawn Park.
Son of First Samurai faces a tall task Feb. 7 for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, coming back to defend his title against Commissioner and Constitution along with European invader Sloane Avenue.
In a race full of returning runners, Carve proved best to take the $100,000 Fifth Season Stakes Jan. 16 at Oaklawn Park.
Trainer Billy Gowan had several options for the 4-year-old debut of Ride On Curlin, but he decided to take what he believes is the path of least resistance: a second-level allowance Jan. 15 in the ninth race at Oaklawn.
Lea left no doubts he's back, posting an impressive 1/2-length victory over Confrontation to take the $150,000 Hal's Hope Stakes (gr. III) at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 10. It was his second Hal's Hope score.
Lea looked like he would be a major player in 2014, when he began a promising campaign with victories in the $100,000 Hal's Hope Stakes (gr. III) and the $500,000 Donn Handicap (gr. I) at Gulfstream Park.
