Carpe Diem, the even-money morning-line favorite in the $1 million Toyota Blue Grass (gr. I) April 4 at Keeneland, arrived at the Lexington oval the evening of March 31 and galloped around the main track April 1.
Carpe Diem won the Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (gr. I) by 6 1/4 lengths during the fall meet in his graded debut and returns to Lexington after winning the March 7 Tampa Bay Derby (gr. II) in his first start of 2015.
"If you don't do it (again), they're right there to say, 'This guy can do better.' That's the way it goes," said Nick Zito, who will saddle Quimet in the March 28 Florida Derby (gr. I) and Frammento in the Blue Grass (gr. I).
Upstart, winner of the Holy Bull Stakes (gr. III) and disqualified from first in the Besilu Stables Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II), breezed six furlongs at Palm Meadows March 13. Frosted and Imperia also worked.
