This year's edition of the $400,000 Super Derby (gr. II) at Louisiana Downs Sept. 6 drew a competitive filed of 11, headed by the one-two finishers of the Ohio Derby and the first three finishers of the Prelude Stakes.
Todd Pletcher recorded his 1,000th career stakes winner when Protonico surged late under Joe Bravo to take the $300,000 Smarty Jones Stakes (gr. III) at Parx Racing on the Labor Day Pennsylvania card Sept. 1.
Ten 3-year-olds, some of which may have their sights on the $1 million Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II) in three weeks, will battle in the $300,000 Smarty Jones Stakes (gr. III) Sept. 1 at Parx Racing.
On paper, the $1.25 million Travers Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga Race Course appears to be a three-horse race among Bayern, Tonalist, and Wicked Strong, there are several improving 3-year-olds who could be potential upsetters.
