A pair of horses who earned graded stakes wins as juveniles will try to add to their resumes June 14 at Churchill Downs when Tapiture and Rise Up meet in the $100,000 Matt Winn Stakes (gr. III).
Donegal Racing's Paddy O'Prado earned his first grade I win in the $400,000 Secretariat Stakes, taking over in upper stretch and bounding home to victory as the 1-2 favorite Aug. 21 at Arlington Park.

A day after the third-highest price ever recorded for a yearling sold at public auction, things were much calmer at Wednesday's session of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. But there was a $1-million horse sold and the gross and average were up.

Verne H. Winchell, who founded a successful donut company and campaigned champions Mira Femme and Tight Spot, died Nov. 26 of a heart attack following his daily exercise routine at his Las Vegas home. He had turned 87 in October.
Squirtle Squirt set scorching early fractions but was overtaken by Early Flyer in deep stretch in Monday's $108,600 Lazaro Barrera Memorial Stakes (gr. III) at Hollywood Park. Under Chris McCarron, Ron McAnally-trained Early Flyer completed the seven furlongs in 1:20.42 on a fast track to earn his first win since February's San Vicente Stakes (gr. II).
