Countdown to the Cup: Here Come the Longshots

If it's the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships, you can bet (literally) that there will be several longshot winners. With so many of the grade I races this year appearing to be wide-open, with full fields, there is no reason to think this year will be any different from past Breeders' Cups.

Ashado Bounces Back Into Winner's Circle

Ashado, last year's champion 3-year-old filly, rebounded nicely from her worst career defeat with a game triumph Saturday in the Beldame Stakes (gr. I) at Belmont Park and will now move on to attempt to win the Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I), which she won last year.

Ashado Ready to Shine Again in Go for Wand

Starlight Stable's Ashado, who served notice that she is fit and ready with a front-running romp in the Ogden Phipps Handicap (gr. I), is clearly the one to beat in the $250,000 Go for Wand (gr. I) at Saratoga Race Course Sunday.

Ashado Looms in Ogden Phipps Handicap

A small but talented field of five will vie for a share of the $300,000 purse in Saturday's Ogden Phipps Handicap (gr. I) at Belmont Park. The 1 1/16-mile race for fillies and mares features grade I winners Ashado and Society Selection, along with grade II stars Bending Strings and Daydreaming--each looking for their first grade I score.

Saintliness Puts Speed to Test in Shuvee

Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin will be one of perhaps 100,000 people attending Pimlico Racecourse Saturday for the 130th Preakness (gr. I), but sometime around 4:40 p.m., he will sneak away from the festivities to watch his mare Saintliness race in the $200,000 Shuvee Handicap (gr. II) at Belmont Park.

Madcap Escapade to Return in Shirley Jones

Madcap Escapade and Society Selection, two of the nation's best 3-year-old fillies last year, head a list of 17 named to the $150,000 Shirley Jones Handicap (gr. II) for fillies and mares at seven furlongs Feb. 19 at Gulfstream Park.

'Society' Not a Bad Selection in Distaff

If looks have anything to do with the outcome, sophomore Society Selection has an outstanding chance to get Hall of Fame trainer H. Allen Jerkens his first win in a Breeders' Cup race Saturday in the $2-million Breeders' Cup Distaff – Presented by Nextel (gr. I).

Sightseek Exits on Perfect Beldame Note

Juddmonte Farm's Sightseek ended a spectacular career in a gallop Saturday afternoon, waltzing off to a repeat victory in the $750,000 Beldame (gr. I) for fillies and mares at Belmont Park.

Baffert, Jerkens Fillies Spar in Test

A group of a dozen 3-year-old fillies will vie Saturday in the 79th running of the $250,000 Test Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga Race Course. Headlined by Friendly Michelle and Society Selection, the field will go seven furlongs on a surface that could prove wet -- given a stormy upstate New York forecast for the Spa's opening weekend.

First Jewel of Triple Tiara is Mother Goose

Six talented fillies will contest Saturday's $300,000 Mother Goose (gr. I) at Belmont Park, including the top two finishers from the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I), Ashado and Island Sand. The other two legs of the Triple Tiara include the $500,000 Coaching Club American Oaks (gr. I) on July 24th, and the $750,000 Alabama (gr. I) on Aug. 21st.

Society Selection's Big Move Wins Comely

Favored Society Selection, who lost twice in graded stakes races at short odds at Gulfstream Park earlier this year, turned in a smashing effort Friday to win the $112,000 Comely (gr. III) for 3-year-old fillies at Aqueduct.

Game Miss Coronado Hangs on in Davona Dale

Stonerside Stable's homebred Miss Coronado, shipping from Southern California and making her first start on the dirt, held off Eye Dazzler, Society Selection and Last Song in going gate to wire to win the $150,000 Davona Dale (gr. II) for 3-year-old fillies Saturday at Gulfstream Park.
