Princess of Sylmar, who rattled off four consecutive grade I wins last year, returned to the work tab Feb. 16 for trainer Todd Pletcher with a three-furlong breeze at Palm Meadows.
Beholder's smashing victory in the Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I) ensured her a second consecutive Eclipse Award. She was voted champion 3-year-old filly of 2013 over finalists Princess of Sylmar and Close Hatches.
Todd Pletcher's deep bench of top quality runners sometimes make it difficult to gauge his accomplishments when compared to those of other trainers. But in 2013, he was in a league of his own.
Perhaps no Eclipse Award category overflowed with more talent than among the 3-year-old fillies of 2013. They performed admirably against each other and then went out and defeated the best of their older counterparts.
Led by Horse of the Year candidates Mucho Macho Man, Will Take Charge, and 2012 Horse of the Year Wise Dan, the finalists for the 2013 Eclipse Awards were announced Jan. 8.

Champion Royal Delta looks to defend her status as the racing world's star female against the brilliant 3-year-old Princess of Sylmar Sept. 28 in the $400,000 Beldame (gr. I) at Belmont Park.
Named for Racing Hall of Fame trainer H. Allen Jerkens, the Saratoga championship will be the fourth in a row and ninth in 12 years for Pletcher, who first won in 1998.

With most of the big-name 3-year-old fillies on the sidelines or headed elsewhere, King of Prussia Stable's Princess of Sylmar will face only five foes in the $600,000 Alabama Stakes (gr. I) Aug. 17 at Saratoga Race Course.
Todd Pletcher, who could saddle the top two choices in the Travers Stakes, sent star 3-year-olds Palace Maliceand Verrazano out for easy half-mile breezes in :49,02 and :49.05, respectively, Aug. 11.
Whitney Invitational winner Cross Traffic emerged from his first grade I victory "very well," trainer Todd Pletcher reported Aug. 4, with the Woodward Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga Race Course as his next major target.
