The most expensive Breeders' Cup World Championship winners as determined by their auction prices were sold as yearlings.
When Lane's End scratched all six of its horses catalogued for Tuesday's final session of the Keeneland select yearling sale, it created a bit of an uproar. Bill Farish discussed the decision Wednesday.
Unlike Monday's opener, in which only two horses were sold in excess of seven figures, the second session of Keeneland's July Selected Yearling Sale was strong from start to finish. For the entire two-day sale, Keeneland reported 87 yearlings were sold for a total of $42,385,000. The sale average of $487,184 represented a decline of 31.4% from 2001 when 89 horses were sold for a total of $63,212,000 and an average price of $710,247.
The yearling selling season kicks off in Kentucky Monday with the opening of the Keeneland July select yearling auction. The average price at the sale has increased for seven consecutive years, and last year's figure of $710,247 was the highest ever recorded at any yearling auction in the world. But keeping up that pace might not be easy in 2002.
Keeneland has catalogued 200 horses for its July 15-16 selected yearling sale. The catalogued yearlings were selected from more than 600 entries.
While only two of the six yearlings from the late Mr. Prospector's final crop of foals exceeded their reserve price, the two that did sell on Tuesday night in the final session of the Keeneland July select yearling sale pushed the legendary sire over the $200-million mark in career revenue for yearlings sold at public auction. With $5,500,000 in receipts at this year's July sale, the son of Raise a Native now has $202,884,728 in lifetime yearling sale revenue.
Consignors who represent the majority of yearlings catalogued to the Keeneland July select sale have agreed to have ultrasound examinations conducted on their horses to confirm the absence of pericarditis.
