The Illinois Racing Board approved this year's Chicago-area Thoroughbred stakes schedule Jan. 31 despite strong opposition by horsemen to the continuation of one race.

The guaranteed Pick 4, will cover races eight through 11 and will include the $700,000 Beverly D. Stakes, the Arlington Million and the $400,000 Secretariat Stakes. All are grade I turf events.
Arlington Park will return to its traditional May opening for the 2003 season after conducting a June through October season for the past two years. The 2003 schedule includes 29 stakes worth more than $5.5 million in purses during its 104 days of racing from May 9 to Sept. 27.
The Simon Bray-trained Astra has been made the 8-5 morning line favorite for Saturday's $700,000 Beverly D. Handicap (gr. IT) on Arlington Million Day after drawing post 7 on Wednesday. A total of nine fillies and mares will go postward in the 1 3/16-mile race.
