Declan's Moon, Wilko Share Top Weight on Experimental

Undefeated Declan's Moon and Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) winner Wilko share the highweight assignment of 126 pounds on the 2004 Experimental Free Handicap, released Monday by The Jockey Club.

No Surprises at Top of Experimental Free Handicap

The suspense leading up to the end of January wasn't whether the colt Vindication and the filly Storm Flag Flying would be voted champion 2-year-olds. They were. The suspense was whether the two unbeaten juveniles would be weighted above the standard weight--126 pounds for males and 123 for fillies--on the 2002 Experimental Free Handicap. They weren't.

Macho Uno Number One on Experimental Free Handicap

There wasn't much separating Macho Uno and Point Given in both the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) and the Experimental Free Handicap for males. Macho Uno held off Point Given by a nose in the Juvenile and was assigned one pound more than that rival on the Experimental. Ranked a pound below Point Given was A P Valentine, who turned in a powerful run to win the Champagne Stakes (gr. I), but then ran last in the Juvenile. Overall, nine horses were weighted at 120 pounds or more, the same number as in 1999.
