  • Times Are Tough for Pinhookers

    If the recent Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. (OBS) February select sale of 2-year-olds in training was any indication, it's going to be a tough year for yearling-to-juvenile pinhookers. The rate of return (ROR) on their investment, 30.7%, ranked among their worst ever based on figures that date back to 1990. It was the weakest since the ROR dropped to its lowest point during the 20-year period of 17.1% in 1993.

    DataTrack International, a company that that quantifies speed, stride length, and motion analysis at juvenile auctions, recently announced the results of a study of sale 2-year-olds that looked at the types of surfaces over which the horses were breezed during under tack shows and then followed how they performed in races over synthetic and dirt tracks.

    The Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. (OBS) has cataloged 523 horses for its March select sale of 2-year-olds in training. The number is up 13.7% from last year's total of 460.

  • F-T to Sponsor Fountain of Youth Stakes

    Fasig-Tipton is teaming with Gulfstream Park to sponsor the $250,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II). The 63rd running of the race, which will called the "Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes," is scheduled for Feb. 28 in South Florida. The Fasig-Tipton Florida select sale of 2-year-olds in training will be held March 3.

  • OBS February Sale Has 200 Juveniles

    The Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. has more horses for its February select sale of 2-year-olds in training than it did in 2008, according to Tom Ventura, the auction firm's general manager and director of sales. OBS will catalog 200 juveniles, up 16.3% from last year's total of 172.

  • F-T Juvenile Sale Will Have 272 Horses

    Fasig-Tipton will catalog 272 horses for its Florida select sale of 2-year-olds in training, according to the company's chairman, Walt Robertson. The number is about the same as in 2008, when 270 horses were in the book.

    Keeneland to Offer 2YO Steroid Testing

    Keeneland officials plan to expand their testing program for exogenous anabolic steroids in sale horses to include the April select juvenile auction. That decision came after Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear signed emergency regulations Sept. 5 that ban the use of the common steroids boldenone, nandrolone, and testosterone in Thoroughbred and Standardbred racehorses competing in Kentucky.

    Second World Record in One Day at Fasig-Tipton Calder Sale

    For the second time Tuesday, a world-record price for a juvenile sold at public auction was set during the Fasig-Tipton selected 2-year-olds in training sale at Calder Race Course. The new world record price of $4.5 million was paid by Japanese owner Fusao Sekiguchi for a colt from the first crop sired by Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Fusaichi Pegasus, who was raced by Sekiguchi.

  • Barretts March Catalogue Includes 53 Thoroughbred Corp. Horses

    Barretts has catalogued 175 horses for the regular portion of its March sale of 2-year-olds in training in Southern California. In addition, the auction will offer 53 head (including five juveniles) in a dispersal of horses of racing age by The Thoroughbred Corp.
