  • Endangered Mares Removed From Feed Lot

    Following more than a week of difficult negotiations, 36 pregnant Thoroughbred mares and one stallion were removed from a Phoenix, Ariz., feedlot Aug. 15 and are now at two safe locations in the state, eventually bound for new homes.

    A couple of buyers new to the European bloodstock scene helped Arqana's August yearling sale begin on a bright note in Deauville, France, Aug. 15.

  • Mullins in Hot Water With TCO2 Complaint

    Trainer Jeff Mullins, already on probation following a 20-day suspension for a Class 2 medication violation earlier this year, could face an additional 70 days after being accused in a second California Horse Racing board complaint.

    Backseat Rhythm showed an appreciation for Saratoga's yielding inner turf course Aug. 15 when she powered home from the back of the pack to dominate the $150,000 Lake Placid Stakes (gr. IIT) for her first stakes victory.

  • TRA Endorses Equine Safety Measures

    The Thoroughbred Racing Associations board of directors Aug. 15 endorsed the recommendations of The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Safety Committee regarding the elimination of androgenic anabolic steroids in Thoroughbreds in racing and training, as well as other equine safety measures.

  • Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame Gala Set

    The Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame will honor those that have enriched the tradition of horse racing in Texas at its 10th annual gala Oct. 4.

  • Belmont winner Da' Tara is continuing his preparations for the Travers.

    Da' Tara Fires 'Bullet' Work For Travers

    Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Da' Tara fired a bullet work Aug. 15, and along with Jim Dandy (gr. II) winner Macho Again, head the likely field for the Aug. 23 Travers (gr. I).

  • Two-time Sovereign Award winner True Metropolitan is the highweight in the Longacres Mile.

    Tropic Storm Favored in Longacres Mile

    California shipper Tropic Storm, graded stakes-placed in his last two efforts, was installed as the 5-2 morning line favorite in the $300,000 Longacres Mile (gr. III) Aug. 17 at Emerald Downs.

  • Bourbon Co. Secretariat Festival Planned

    The first Bourbon County Secretariat Festival is scheduled for Sept. 20 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Bourbon County Fair Grounds in Paris, Ky.

  • Emerald Downs to Benefit Breast Cancer

    Emerald Downs, a Breeders' Cup Challenge partner, will host a Hats and Heels Day to benefit The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Puget Sound Affiliate on Washington Oaks Day at Emerald Downs, Aug. 16, in advance of the Aug. 17 Longacres Mile, a Breeders' Cup Challenge race.

  • Mudd Appointed to Equibase Committee

    William "Bill" Mudd, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Churchill Downs Inc., has been appointed by the Thoroughbred Racing Associations of North America to the Equibase Company Management Committee, it was announced Aug. 14 by Equibase chairman Alan Marzelli.

    Red Rocks Out of Sword Dancer Stakes

    J. Paul Reddam's Red Rocks, the 9-5 favorite for the $500,000 Sword Dancer Invitational Stakes (gr. IT) at Saratoga Aug. 16, has been declared out of the race by trainer Mark Henning.

  • NTRA to Seek Commitments on Reform Plan

    Support for a proposed national strategic plan for equine welfare and safety and other reforms will be sought Sept. 12 when the National Thoroughbred Racing Association brings together industry representatives for discussion and -- it hopes -- commitment to action.
