Keeneland Suffers More Setbacks

The marketplace continued to take a pounding from negative economic forces outside the Thoroughbred industry during the third day of the Keeneland November breeding stock sale in Lexington. Compared to 2007, the Nov. 5 session was down 42.1% in gross revenue, 33.3% in average price, and 36.5% in median price. The buy-back rate soared from 20.9% last year to 28.2% this year.

Three days after Stardom Bound sold for $5.7 million at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November select mixed sale, her dam, My White Corvette, brought $825,000 during the third session the Keeneland November breeding stock auction in Lexington.

The Carl G. Rose Classic and Elmer Heubeck Distaff Handicap, at $200,000 apiece, are the richest events on the Florida Million program Nov. 8 at Calder Race Course. But the matchup that figures to draw the most attention is between the popular veteran Silver Tree and the streaking Soldier's Dancer, who square off on the Calder turf earlier in the day.

Belmont Handle, Attendance Averages Down

The 37-day 2008 Belmont fall meeting, which ended on Oct. 26, produced mixed business results. All-sources handle on NYRA races was $356.3 million, compared with the 2007 figure of $346.5 million, for an increase of 2.8%. Because the 2008 meet included four more days than the 2007 meet, there was actually an 8.3% decline in the equivalent daily average all-sources handle figure.
