    Rain Shuts Down Santa Anita Racing

    Santa Anita canceled racing Jan. 5, because the new Cushion Track is not draining properly. The track did an extensive renovation last month that was supposed to fix this problem. Five inches of rain have fallen, according to officials. More is expected tonight and could affect racing for the entire weekend.

  • Pols Reluctant to Tackle Pricing

    The question of whether state legislators should become more involved in pari-mutuel pricing and distribution continues to be asked, and at this point, there doesn't appear to be an answer--at least a definitive one.

    Bernardini Sires First Foal

    The first reported foal by 3-year-old Eclipse champion and Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner Bernardini was born Jan. 4 at Gracefield Farm near Lexington. The newborn filly, bred by Gracefield and Partners, is out of the multiple stakes producer Belle Nuit.

    Odds-on choice Crested, dropping out of grade I company for trainer Wally Dollase, swept to victory in the Cotton Fitzsimmons Mile Handicap on the grass at Phoenix's Turf Paradise Jan. 5.

    Trainer Jennifer Leigh-Pedersen was suspended 60 days by the New York State Racing and Wagering Board from an incident in March 2005, when state investigators found injectable bottles in the office of her Aqueduct barn.
