    Undefeated Salute the Sarge, taking advantage of a couple of key scratches, wore down odds-on favorite Georgie Boy close to home to win the $147,000 Best Pal Stakes (gr. II) for 2-year-olds on the Del Mar Polytrack Aug. 12.

    Favorite Laverock could do no better than fourth as Saddex powered to a 1 1/4-length victory in the Rheinland-Pokal der Sparkasse KolnBonn (Ger-I) at Cologne on August 12.

    The first group I race of the year for juveniles was intended to be a coming-out party for the undefeated Henrythenavigator. Instead, 25-1 outsider Saoirse Abu surprised the field in the Independent Waterford Wedgwood Phoenix Stakes (Ire-I) at The Curragh Aug. 12.

    Rags to Riches to Skip Alabama; Will Train for Ruffian Instead

    Belmont Stakes winner Rags to Riches posted a five-furlong workout over Saratoga's main track Aug. 12, after which trainer Todd Pletcher confirmed the Michael Tabor-owned filly will not run in the $600,000 Alabama Stakes (gr. I) Aug. 18. Instead, Pletcher plans to run multiple Grade 1 winner Octave and American Oaks (gr. I) winner Panty Raid, both of whom also worked Aug. 12, in the 1 1/4-mile Alabama.

  • Talkin About Love Steps Up For BC Oaks Victory

    Talkin About Love came into the $200,000 Monmouth Park Breeders' Cup Oaks (gr. III) having won her last four allowance races by a combined 19 3/4-lengths, but the 3-year-old filly had never won a stakes and never tried a distance of over a mile. She came from off the pace to score by 1-3/4 lengths Aug. 12.
