  • Fly for Avie Upsets E.P. Taylor

    Ivan Dalos' Fly for Avie, ridden by Todd Kabel, won the $330,000 E.P. Taylor Stakes (Can-I) on Sunday, defeating co-favorites Lady Upstage and Innuendo in a blanket finish. The winner surged down the stretch on the outside to win the 1 1/4-mile race on firm turf in 2:02.78.

  • King Cugat Noses Mandarin Marsh for Jamaica Win

    Centennial Farms' King Cugat launched a powerful closing run at the top of the stretch to catch pacesetter Mandarin Marsh at the wire, winning the $200,000 Jamaica Handicap (gr. IIT) by a nose Sunday at Belmont Park. Under Jerry Bailey, the Bill Mott-trained King Cugat completed the 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.63 on firm turf.

  • Fistfite KO's Cowdin Rivals

    Peter Callahan's Fistfite moved up to the lead on the turn and edged away in the stretch to win the $108,800 Cowdin Stakes (gr. III) by 2 1/4 lengths Sunday at Belmont Park. Under Richard Migliore, Fistfite completed the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:15.63 on a fast track.

  • Tuzla, ridden by David Flores, holds off Happyanunoit and Spanish Fern for a victory in the Ramona Handicap on Sept. 4, 1999, at Del Mar.

    Millionaire Turf Mare Tuzla Retired

    Tuzla, who received support for a 1999 Eclipse Award as top female grass runner, has been retired from racing with earnings of $1,332,587 and might be bred to Central Kentucky stallion Kingmambo.
