Mrs. Barton D. Heller and William J. Morey Jr.'s Mellow Fellow closed for a 1 1/2-length victory in Saturday's $198,750 Bay Meadows Breeders' Cup Sprint Handicap (gr. III) to notch his sixth consecutive win. The 7-year-old gelding completed the six furlongs in 1:08.35 on the fast track.
Mellow Fellow is selling Tuesday as part the the dispersal of the Estate of Barton D. Heller during the 2002 Barretts May sale of 2-year-olds in training.
Mellow Fellow's win streak began in October and includes victories in the Montclair and Danville Handicaps. The gelded bay son of Belek has won 11 of 24 career starts, with Saturday's win marking his first in a graded stakes race. He previously finished second in the 2000 Los Angeles Handicap (gr. III) at Hollywood Park. Mellow Fellow is trained by Morey and earned $110,000 for the win.
Under Lonnie Meche, Explicit went to the early lead as the six-horse field separated into three pairs, with Mellow Fellow in the trailing group just outside of even-money favorite Swept Overboard. Explicit raced a half-mile in :44.70 to take a two-length lead over Sempai as Mellow Fellow moved up into the third, four lengths off the lead. Explicit held a 2 1/2-length advantage after five furlong, but Mellow Fellow surged late under Russell Baze to earn the win. Explicit finished second, three-quarters of a length ahead of Swept Overboard. Strike for Glory, Sempai, and Alyzig completed the order of finish.
Mellow Fellow, the third choice in the wagering at just over 5-2, returned $7.20, $3.20, and $2.20. Explicit paid $3.60 and $2.40 and completed the $1 exacta worth $13.30. Swept Overboard paid $2.10 to show.
Mellow Fellow was bred in Kentucky by Robert B. Berger and James E. Ballard and sold for $9,500 at the 1996 Keeneland September yearling sale. (Chart, Equibase
