Mercedes Stable's Publication put in a six-furlong work at Hawthorne Friday in preparation for a start in the April 6 Illinois Derby (gr. II) at Sportsman's Park.
With jockey Randall Meier riding, the gelded son of Petionville completed the distance in 1:18 4/5 on a sealed surface which was labeled fast.
"I thought he went pretty good," said Meier. "The times were kind of slow all morning. They had just sealed the track. We wanted to work at Sportsman's, but they closed it up on us before we could get over there."
Meier was in the irons for Publication's lone career stakes win, a neck-length victory over It'sallinthechase in the Arlington-Washington Futurity (gr. II) last September. In his most recent start, the Terry Knight trainee finished last in the Louisiana Derby (gr. II) while making his seasonal debut.
Another likely Illinois Derby starter is Louisiana Derby winner Repent, who will work at Gulfstream Park Saturday before shipping to Kentucky.
"We'll make a decision on when to van up (to Sportsman's Park) once we get to Kentucky, but we'll probably come up to Chicago the day before the race," trainer Ken McPeek said earlier this week.
Jerry Bailey will again ride the son of Louis Quatorze in the Illinois Derby.
