Shadwell Stud announced Oct. 5 that promising European freshman sire Aqlaam died after failing to respond to treatment for an infection to the guttural pouch.

Campaigned by Sheikh Hamdan and trained by William Haggas, the 8-year-old son of Oasis Dream won the Prix du Moulin (Fr-I) and totesport.com Summer Mile Stakes (Eng-II), and finished second to champion Goldikova in the Prix Jacques le Marois (Fr-I).

From his first crop to race2-year-olds of 2013Aqlaam had been represented by six winners.

"This is an enormous blow to everyone involved with Aqlaam as it has come just as he was establishing himself as an exciting young stallion," Richard Lancaster, Shadwell Stud director, said in a statement.
