Ireland's Coolmore Stud reported Sept. 30 that injured equine superstar St Nicholas Abbey's recovery continues to be on track and that "surgeons at Fethard Equine Hospital couldn't be happier with St Nicholas Abbey's progress to date."
A 6-year-old son of Montjeu, St Nicholas Abbey fractured his right foreleg while training at Ballydoyle July 23. He underwent surgery for the injury July 24 and two days later was operated on for colic.
"Recently fitted with a lighter and less restrictive cast, he is more mobile and is putting more confident weight on the injured leg," a Coolmore release said. "St Nicholas Abbey's appetite is good and he continues to gain weight. His blood work remains stable and his medication has been much reduced."
Unplaced in only three of his 21 career starts, St Nicholas Abbey has nine wins, two seconds, and seven third-place finishes to his credit while earning $7,863,492. His victories include the Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Turf, Investec Diamond Jubilee Coronation Cup (three times), Racing Post Trophy, and Dubai Sheema Classic Presented by Longines, all grade/group I events.
