Jockey Monica Garcia is 'congratulated' after her first win.

Apprentice jockey Monica Garcia captured her first career race in the opener at Monmouth Park July 12, piloting Lee Lewis' Global Asset to a 3 3/4-length victory in the $10,000 maiden claiming event (VIDEO).

"This is thrilling," said Garcia, a 30-year-old native of Chihuahua, Mexico. "I got my license late last year here. I didn't ride at all over the winter, but started when I got back here. This is just a great experience."

Garcia placed the Mark Hennig-trained Global Asset just behind dueling leaders Peanutbutterbrown and West Bay Road in the backstretch. Turning for home, she urged her charge to challenge Peanutbutterbrown, getting the lead past mid-stretch and drawing clear late. Global Asset was the 7-10 favorite in the field of six.

Friday's first race marked the jockey's 16th career mount. A 3-year-old gelding by Indian Charlie, Global Asset was making his third career start. Trainer Claudio Gonzalez claimed the winner for Two Rivers Racing Stable.
