Veteran Illinois-based trainer Charlie Bettis died June 21 at the age of 62 of natural causes, according to Arlington Park.

A West Virginia native, Bettis saddled 397 winners from 3,107 starts, including stakes victors Francois, Alone At Last, Chief Mistress, and Megoman, according to The Jockey Club Information Systems.

Before starting his own stable, Bettis was an assistant Grover "Buddy" Delp for more than a decade, and was also an assistant to the late Ernie Poulos.

Bettis was preceded in death by his wife Janell, who died in September 2011.
