Marketing Mix makes her first start of the year in the Gamely.
Grade I winners Marketing Mix and Lady of Shamrock head a solid lineup for the $250,000 Gamely Stakes (gr. IT) at Betfair Hollywood Park May 27, the headline event on the Memorial Day card.
Glen Hill Farm's Marketing Mix makes her first appearance of the year for trainer Tom Proctor. Winner of the Rodeo Drive Stakes (gr. IT) at Santa Anita Park last fall, she has not been out since her game runner-up effort to Zagora in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT) Nov. 2.
The Gamely, at 1 1/8 miles on turf, is the ninth on a 10-race Monday Hollywood card that also includes the Los Angeles Handicap (gr. III) for sprinters. Seven older fillies and mares are entered in the Gamely, which is set to go off at 5 p.m. PDT.
Gary Stevens, fresh off his Preakness Stakes (gr. I) triumph aboard Oxbow May 18, has the call on Marketing Mix. A three-time winner of the Gamely, the 50-year-old Hall of Fame rider last rode at Hollywood in 2005, guiding Alphabet Kisses to victory in the A Gleam Invitational Handicap (gr. IIT).
"I worked (Marketing Mix) at Keeneland about a month and a half ago and I can't wait to get on her back," said Stevens, a six-time Hollywood Park riding champion who came out of retirement this year.
Stevens previously won the Gamely aboard Northern Aspen (1987), Metamorphose (1992) and Donna Viola (1997).
Marketing Mix, who will be making her debut at Hollywood, has worked three times since arriving from Kentucky at the start of the month. In her only work over the Hollywood grass, she clocked seven furlongs in a handy 1:26 flat May 17.
The 5-year-old daughter of Medaglia d'Oro has won half of her 16 lifetime starts with five placings and has earnings of $1,659,518. She'll break from post 7 carrying co-high weight of 123 pounds.
Lady of Shamrock also shoulders 123 off her win, via disqualification after finishing second, in the Santa Barbara Handicap (gr. IIT) April 20 at Santa Anita. Lady of Shamrock was making a powerful move for the lead along the inside when she was shut off by Viva Carina at the sixteenth pole and forced to steady.
Hronis Racing's 4-year-old daughter of Scat Daddy ran fifth in last year's Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, finishing 1 3/4 lengths behind Marketing Mix.
Lady of Shamrock won a pair of grade I races last year, including the American Oaks at Hollywood. In her start prior to the Santa Barbara, she was a late-running second to Gamely foe Tiz Flirtatious in the Santa Ana Stakes (gr. IIT). She'll be cutting back in distance by a furlong in the Gamely but has proven effective at 1 1/8 miles with two wins and two seconds from four starts.
Rafael Bejarano has the return call for trainer John Sadler on Lady of Shamrock, who breaks from post 6 with a lifetime mark of seven wins from 13 starts and earnings of $825,400.
Sadler, who is seeking his first Gamely victory, will also send out longshot Miss Ellany for Hronis Racing.
The California-bred Tiz Flirtatious will be seeking her third consecutive win for owner-breeder Pamela C. Ziebarth and trainer Marty Jones. Prior to her victory in the Santa Ana, the 5-year-old daughter of Tizbud defeated state-breds in the Valentine Dancer Jan. 26. Julien Leparoux is back aboard.
Halo Dolly, another California-bred mare, captured the Wilshire Handicap (gr. IIIT) April 28 for Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. She carries 123 pounds and will have Garrett Gomez in the irons. A 15-time winner from 29 races while banking $752,786, she's a 5-year-old daughter of Popular.
In her only prior try against grade I company in the Flower Bowl Invitational (gr. IT) last September, Halo Dolly finished ninth on a yielding inner turf course at Belmont Park. She is owned by a partnership that includes Hollendorfer, who won the 2010 Gamely with Tuscan Evening.
My Gi Gi upset Lady of Shamrock in the 2012 Honeymoon Handicap (gr. IIT) over the course and distance last June. She will make her first start of the year for owners Dennis Conner, Lloyd DeBruycker, and Wade Jacobsen and trainer Peter Eurton. The 4-year-old E Dubai filly has been sidelined since finishing fifth in the Rodeo Drive Sept. 29.
Private Affair, fifth of 11 in the ungraded Golden Poppy Stakes at Golden Gate Fields April 7, completes the field.
