Group I Encore for Platelet With Goodwood Win

Platelet unleashed a furious rally from far back to win The Distinctive Homes Goodwood Stakes (Aus-I), South Australia's premier sprint worth Aus$500,000, May 11 at Morphettville.

Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock's 4-year-old Strategic mare notched her second straight group I win in thrilling fashion as she got up to edge locally based gelding Conservatorium, a 71-1 longshot who looked poised for the win in the straight.

Ridden by Ben Melham, Platelet stormed down the center of the track and seized command in the closing stages to win by a half-length at 9-1 odds. The result followed her victory April 27 in the Sportingbet Classic Robert Sangster Stakes (Aus-I), also at Morphettville.

"I haven't done much with her since the Sportingbet, but she's in the form of her life," trainer Darren Wier told Adelaide Now. Platelet covered 1,200 meters (about six furlongs) in 1:09.65 on turf rated good.

Conservatorium held on second, and Altar, who set the early pace with Conservatorium to his outside, outfinished Karacatis in a photo for third in the 16-horse field.

Group I winner Moment Of Change, the 2-1 favorite, started slowly and raced near the back of the field before picking off rivals to finish fifth for trainer Peter Moody, who won last year's edition of the race with megastar mare Black Caviar.

Australian-bred Platelet has been a consistent performer in her two-season career, posting seven wins, five seconds, and five thirds from 19 starts. The bay mare is out of the winning Dracula mare Bloodline.

Sire Strategic, who has four group I winners, including Australian champion 2-year-old Meurice, will stand the Southern Hemisphere breeding season at Darley's Northwood Park in Victoria.
