Prominent equine surgeon Dr. Larry Bramlage was taken to University Hospital near Louisville, Ky. on May 2 after falling from the back of a golf cart and hitting his head in the barn area of Churchill Downs.

Kentucky Horse Racing Commission equine medical director Dr. Mary Scollay confirmed the accident. She said Bramlage, 61, was conscious and alert, and was "just being taken to the hospital to be checked out."

The specialist from Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital near Lexington was on the backside not far from the five-eighths pole when the incident occurred.

Bramlage is a representative for the American Association of Equine Practitioners' On-Call Program. It is designed to deliver accurate veterinary information to broadcast and print journalists regarding the health of equine athletes leading up to and during big events such as the upcoming Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I).

A later statement from AAEP said that Bramlage will remain hospitalized overnight for observation due to the nature of the injury.

"Dr. Bramlage appreciates the concern and best wishes extended by the racing community," the statement read.
