A Smart Strike filly fetched the highest price so far at the Fasig-Tipton Florida select 2-year-olds in training sale March 25 with a final bid of $700,000. Consigned by Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds, agent, as Hip No. 19, she was bought by Canadian Nat Rea's Regis Farms.
Bred in Kentucky by SF Bloodstock, the $700,000 filly is the third foal out of the unraced Unbridled's Song mare Music Room, who is a half sister to multiple grade I winner Music Note (by A.P. Indy) and French classic winner Musical Chimes (by In Excess). Music Room has one other foal of racing age, a 3-year-old that has not yet started named Distorted Music (by Distorted Humor ).
At the 2012 Keeneland September yearling sale, the Smart Strike filly was bought for $250,000 by Hartley/DeRenzo from Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, agent.
Industry newcomer Regis Farms has been a big buyer of young horses this year, including a $1.45 million yearling daughter of Street Sense at the Keeneland January horses of all ages sale. Rea, 47, recently purchased the 300-acre Silver Springs Farm near Paris, Ky., to start building his racing and breeding operation.
