Successful Appeal Colt Stars at Aiken Trials

An unnamed colt by Successful Appeal and a Malibu Moon filly named I Thirtyfive secured victories in the two races for juveniles March 16 at the 71st Aiken Trials.
The Successful Appeal colt completed a quarter mile in :22 3/5 seconds at Aiken to claim first place in the Coward Trophy, a trial for 2-year-old maiden males. Owned by Charles Armstrong, the colt is out of the Street Cry mare Picketline, who is a half sister to grade III winners Valid Expectations and Little Sister.
The winning colt is trained by Dolly Bostwick and was guided to victory by Chad Frederick. Carolinian, by Yes It's True , placed second; with Maximus Decimus, by Offlee Wild , third.
Bred in Kentucky by Fares Farms, the winning colt was withdrawn from the 2012 Keeneland September yearling sale.
In the juvenile race for maiden fillies, I Thirtyfive completed two furlongs in :23 to win the Gaver Trophy. A daughter of Malibu Moon, I Thirtyfive is owned by Mike Rutherford and trained by Brad Stauffer. Miquel Ramos was in the irons.
Rutherford purchased I Thirtyfive for $160,000 at the 2012 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga selected yearling sale. Out of the Pine Bluff mare Guilty Pleasure, I Thirtyfive was bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings. The filly is a half ster to grade II winner Ready to Please.
Following I Thirtyfive to the wire were Illusionist, by Forestry, in second; and Dulcify, by Candy Ride , third.
In other Aiken Trials races, Ted and Joanna Hoover's Hurry Up Jo, by Henny Hughes, won the Von Stade Trophy for maiden fillies and mares 3-years-old and older; Gus Schickendanz's Well Played, by Langfuhr , won the Iselin Hall of Fame Trophy for maiden males 3-and-older; and Don Howard's Say No More, by Langfuhr , won the City of Aiken Trophy for 3-year-olds and up.
In a race for polo ponies, a mare named Havana owned by Pam Gleason took top honors.
