Ahzeemah powers home to win the Nad al Sheba Trophy.

Godolphin won the $200,000 Nad al Sheba Trophy Sponsored by Haras Estrela Energia (UAE-III) for the third straight year March 2 when Ahzeemah held off a strong challenge from Certerach by a neck at Meydan.

The 4-year-old Dubawi gelding tallied his first stakes win in the 2,810-meter (about 1 3/4-mile) turf race that is a prep for the marathon $1 million Dubai Gold Cup (UAE-III) March 30.

Guided by Kieren Fallon, Ahzeemah tracked from fifth as 2012 Irish St. Leger (Ire-I) winner Royal Diamond set a dawdling pace. The bay gelding rapidly advanced around the turn, gained a slim lead entering the stretch, and was all out for the narrow win.

Star Empire, who defeated Ahzeemah by a neck in a prep for the Nad al Sheba Trophy Feb. 7, finished third, three-quarters of a length behind Certerach.

Tenenbaum started slowly but closed strongly from the back of the field to finish another three-quarters of a length back in fourth as the 2-to-1 favorite in North American pools hosted by Kentucky-based AmWest Entertainment. Royal Diamond faded to seventh in the 10-horse field.

Ahzeemah, the 9-to-2 third choice, was timed in 2:59.26 and took his career record to four wins, five seconds, and two thirds from 13 starts for trainer Saeed bin Suroor.

Godolphin won the previous two runnings of the Nad Al Sheba Trophy with Fox Hunt, also a son of Dubawi, in 2012, and Claremont in 2011.

Ahzeemah is the seventh stakes winner thus far this year for Dubawi, and among 54 stakes winners, including 32 graded or group winners overall for the 11-year-old son of Dubai Millennium. He stands for Darley in Europe.

Ahzeemah was a $105,361 weanling purchase by John Ferguson Bloodstock on behalf of Godolphin at the 2009 Tattersalls December foal sale.  He is out of stakes-placed Swiss Roll, by Entrepreneur. Swiss Roll is a half sister to English group III winner Pollen from the family of French group winner Another Dancer
