David B. Allen, who with his wife, Donna Jean Allen, operated Hartwood Farm, died Aug. 18 at his home in Versailles, Ky. He was 81.
Allen bred Pocus Hocus, winner of the 2003 Turnback The Alarm Handicap (gr. III) and Monmouth Beach Stakes in 2004.
A native of Utah, Allen began his 54-year legal career with the California Attorney General's office and was a founding partner of Allen, Rhodes, and Sobelsohn, which specialized in workers' compensation defense in California.
Allen relocated to Kentucky in 1987 and continued to practice law until his death. Allen was a member of the American Bar Association and bar associations in California, Utah, and Kentucky. He was also a member of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association and the Thoroughbred Club of America.
In addition to his wife, Allen is survived by children David Allen, of Mill Creek, Wash., Scott Allen, of Maywood, Calif.; and Neile Ifland, of Versailles, Ky.
