After working five furlongs July 22 workout at Saratoga Race Course | BloodHorse.com Track Profile">Saratoga Race Course, John C. Oxley’s Stealcase has been added to the field for the $1 million Haskell Invitational Handicap (gr. I) at Monmouth Park.
The Haskell will be renewed for the 45th time July 28. With a probable post time of 6:15 p.m. (EDT), the Haskell at 1 1/8 miles for 3-year-olds will be the 13th race on a 14-race card at the New Jersey track.
“He breezed so well at Saratoga yesterday (five furlongs in 1:01.92) that afterward we decided we’ll be there,” trainer Mark Casse said.
Purchased by Casse, as agent, for $320,000 at the 2011 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s March 2-year-olds in training sale, Stealcase has two wins in eight starts. He finished third, a neck behind runner-up and Haskell contender Paynter, in The Cliff’s Edge Derby Trial Stakes and was second in the Matt Winn Stakes, both grade III main track races at Churchill Downs.
“He should have beaten Paynter that day,” Casse said of The Cliff’s Edge. “He lugged in (in the stretch) and right after the wire was ahead of Paynter. Next out, he won an allowance race at Churchill by four lengths. Last out (Matt Winn), he got into all kinds of trouble and still finished second. With the rough trip he had, I don’t even know how he managed to get second.”
Green B. Smith’s Nonios, who will be shipped cross-country by Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer for the Haskell, worked six furlongs, handily, in 1:15 over Del Mar’s All-Weather surface July 23. The Affirmed Stakes (gr. III) winner is scheduled to be aboard a July 26 flight from California that will also include Zayat Stables’ Paynter , who finished second in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) in addition to his effort in The Cliff’s Edge.
Also shipping from the West Coast for the Haskell is J. Paul Reddam’s Handsome Mike , who is multiple grade III-placed for trainer Doug O’Neill. Others definite for the Haskell are Donegeal Racing’s grade I winner Dullahan, who finished third to I'll Have Another in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), and Darley Stable’s Pegasus Stakes (gr. III) winner Le Bernardin.
Others under consideration for the Haskell include Dr. Kendall Hansen and Skychai Racing’s 2011 champion 2-year-old male Hansen, WinStar Farm’s Resorts World Casino New York City Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. I) winner Gemologist , and multiple stakes winner My Adonis, who races for George and Lori Hall.
