Gleaming earned her third stakes victory of the year when she posted an upset over odds-on favorite Bold Affair in the $145,500 Sweet and Sassy Stakes at Delaware Park June 23 (VIDEO).

Ridden for the first time by Alex Citron, Gleaming was carried wide coming into the stretch by the favorite but battled on to register a 1 1/4-length tally. She completed the six-furlong event for fillies and mares in 1:09.20 on a fast track.

Wayne Sanders and Larry Hirsch own Gleaming, who rebounded from a fourth-place finish in the Winning Colors Stakes (gr. III) at Churchill Downs June 2. The chestnut mare won both the American Beauty and Spring Fever stakes at Oaklawn Park this winter for trainer Bret Calhoun.

John James Revocable Trust bred Gleaming, who is out of the End Sweep mare Cupid's Comet, in Oklahoma. The winner was a $52,000 yearling buy as Keeneland in September 2008.

With the scratch of Afleet Lass, just four contested the Sweet and Sassy. Gleaming, the third choice at odds of 6-1, paid $14.60 and $3.60 while keying a $25.20 exacta with Bold Affair, who paid $2.40 as the 4-5 choice. There was no show wagering.

Gleaming tracked pacesetter Winning Image and Bold Affair in third before moving up to challenge on the far outside on the turn. When Bold Affair, ridden by Abel Castellano Jr., drifted out leaving the turn, Winning Image and Jose Caraballo took charge along the inside. But Gleaming recovered to run down the leader past mid-stretch, then edged clear.

Bold Affair got up for second by a head over Winning Image, who posted quick quarter-mile fractions of :21.82 and :44.43. Coax Liberty was 1 3/4 lengths farther back in fourth.

Gleaming, who carried 117 pounds, posted her ninth lifetime win in 18 starts and increased her earnings to $381,405 with the winner's share of $90,000.

Bold Affair, who had a three-race win streak ended, and Winning Image, who had won two straight, each carried top weight of 123 pounds.
